International Measurements

NÚCEM from delegation of MŠVVaŠ SR (Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic) carries out more important international assessments of outcomes and context of education that fulfil criteria of comparative pedagogical researches. The aim of the international assessments is not to evaluate the achievement of individual students or schools, but to observe the achievements of educational systems of participating countries and their changes in time, to discover their strong and weak aspects and to find out possibilities for improvement. In recent, we realize five international studies, mainly OECD PISA and TALIS and studies of IEA PIRLS, TIMSS and ICCS.

Department of International Measurements (OMM) at NÚCEM that works as a national coordination centre for international studies in Slovakia realizes development and adaptation of evaluative frameworks within the frame of these studies and tools for measurement of educational achievements, it also prepares and organizes data collection of participating schools, data processing and analyzes the outcomes. Department of international measurements also provides national reports and constructs the outcomes for application research in the field of education and educational policy. In the Slovak Republic there isn´t any other working compartment with comparable experience in this field, as we are. We are open to international one-to-one partnership.

OECD and IEA

International Measurements are organized by two international organizations: OECD and IEA. Each of them has different aims. While OECD finds out the outcomes of education from the point of view of labour market requirements and focuses on the students in the last years of schooling, IEA observes findings of education in relation to imposed educational curriculum in each participating country and examines students in selected classes in particular degrees of education. Both organizations are interested not only in average achievements (number of points) reached by participating countries, but also they are concerned with the circumstances, that could affect them (e.g. motivation of students, school and household equipment, etc.) and also in other factors (e.g. equality in education).
